Who is Barry Singh?
Barry Singh is the founder of the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra (NRSO). Son of an Indian farmer, he worked his way from farming bananas to being the conductor and artistic director of his own symphony orchestra. He studied at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, where he majored in violin and performance. In 2001, he was recognised nationally when he was awarded the prestigious TOAN (The Orchestras of Australia Network) award for fostering excellence in a regional orchestra at the Sydney Opera House. His journey has been featured on “Australian Story” Programs on the ABC Television “Mr Singh’s Opus” and ‘A Night Like This.” He is also an active member of the “Gabirelli String Quartet” as a violinist.
Barry’s Music Story
His journey started at the age of six when he revealed to his mother his dream of playing the violin and desire of becoming the conductor of a symphony orchestra. He played the violin for the first time when he was in school in Murwillumbah. Although his father did not support his dream, Barry practised in the packing shed but made his way through a scholarship to the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. He returned home to help his mother after the death of his father, but never lost hope that he would one day fulfill his dream.
With hard work and determination, Barry was finally able to start the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra in 1993, which he conducted for almost 20 years. The non-profit organisation offers high-quality, affordable musical productions to local communities. It started with just 18 musicians, and finance was always a struggle because the group had no government funding, forcing it to rely solely on ticket sales. But today, the group has grown to a premier orchestra, and many professionals want to be part of it. It now draws over 60 players from as far as Brisbane, Lismore, and Toowoomba. The orchestra offers concerts in the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers region. It has performed with Opera Queensland, Gold Coast City Ballet, and Dragon Tenors. During Barry’s time with NRSO, performances took place in different venues including:
- Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) Concert Hall
- Gold Coast Art Centre
- Seagulls, Tweed Heads
- Tweed Civic Centre
- Empire Theatre, Toowoomba
